It's that time of year again where you see pumpkin spice latte's, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin roll, pumpkin pie, and now even pumpkin flavored toothpaste. Seriously, google it. Gross.
While I'm not one to jump on a bandwagon and break open a bag of pumpkin spice Oreos, I feel the need to defend this awesome vegetable and the benefits it provides for your dog!
Pumpkin is a great source of fiber. If you've been around your grandparents or parents very long, you know how important fiber can be! Pumpkin is a natural laxative for your dog. As Mary Poppins would say, "Just a spoonful of pumpkin helps the..." well, you get the picture. But there's a flip side! Pumpkin can also help a dog with a loose stool. Fiber is really good at that too!
As puppies go to their new homes, we tend to get calls about a loose stool here and there. This is pretty normal. Many times they have just had a set of shots, they are in a new environment, or they have traveled a further distance than they are used to. We always suggest a spoonful of pumpkin a day to help ease their tummies.
So the next time you are at the grocery store and you see the shelves packed with pumpkin, grab a few cans for the pups! They will be howling for more!
I recommend Libby's 100% pure pumpkin in the can.
