The Name Game

November 13, 2017

I love studying the meaning behind names. Many people ask me how I got the name Yalanda, and the story from my parents is that they wanted something to describe what they believed I would be. Yalanda means "little flower". They knew I would grow and bloom into something beautiful so to speak.

When you pick out a name for your puppy, you know there's a lot of thought that goes into it as well. It's fun to hash it out with your kids on which name will be perfect. A few of our favorites that families have reported back to us are Cypress, Steele, Ru, Cali Blue, and Hulk Smash. Yes, Hulk Smash... that's what happens when your 3 year old loves super hero movies.

Families will want details about the puppies as they begin to search names to try to find something that fits. What's difficult is how much the puppies change week after week. But by 6 weeks of age, they have definitely developed a personality. There are some that are by my side the entire time, they need extra hugs and kisses. Others are curious and loners. Some are playful and ready to go at any time to jump and run after a leaf, a ball, or their favorite - a water bottle. Some are sleepy heads and others are rambunctious and love to pick on their brothers or sisters. I can definitely let you know if your dog should be named "Sassy" or "Hercules".

I can't imagine being Adam in the garden of Eden responsible for naming the creatures that he encountered. But I'm sure he too had reasoning behind the names he gave. His name from the Hebrew language means "man" and derived from Hebrew ('Adam) which translates to "earth" or "ground" and the color "red" meaning the red soil from which he was formed. From the beginning of time, God gives meaning to each person through their name. And as someone changes, their name sometimes changed

too. Such as Saul becoming Paul. There's so much in a name. The Lord has hundreds of names used in scripture to describe His authority, love, protection, and Lordship.

As you pick out the name for your next puppy and you scour the pages of baby books and the internet, just remember that when you see that sweet face, the name will come... and it will be perfect.

"You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." - Matthew 1:21

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven give among men, whereby we must be saved." - Acts 4:12

"If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." - Romans 10:9
